Community Empowerment Luncheon Speaker
Michelle Alexander, Esq.
Michelle
Alexander is a highly acclaimed civil rights lawyer,
advocate, and legal scholar who currently holds a joint appointment
at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity and the
Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University. Prior to joining
the Kirwan Institute, Alexander was an associate professor of law at
Stanford Law School, where she directed the Civil Rights Clinics. In
2005, she won a Soros Justice Fellowship, which supported the writing
of her first book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age
of Colorblindness (The New Press, 2010). The book has received rave
reviews and has been featured in national radio and television media
outlets, including NPR, The Bill Moyers Journal, the Tavis Smiley Show,
C-Span Washington Journal, among others. In March, the book won the
2011 NAACP Image Award for best non-fiction. Alexander is a graduate
of Stanford Law School and Vanderbilt University. Following law school,
she clerked for Justice Harry A. Blackmun on the United States Supreme
Court, and for Chief Judge Abner Mikva on the United States Court of
Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

Rev. Dr. William Thompson
William
Lloyd Thompson has served as the Senior Pastor of Faith United Missionary
Baptist Church in Nassau, Bahamas since 1981. Rev. Thompson received
a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Greer Technical Institute,
Chicago, Ill.; Bachelor of Arts (Sociology & Theology) from American
Baptist Theological Seminary, Nashville, Tn.; Master of Science (Psychology)
from Tennessee State University, Nashville, Tn.; Master of Divinity & Doctorate
of Theology from Emmanuel Bible College, Nashville, Tn. Rev. Thompson
has an international ministry which has taken his powerful kingdom
message to the five continents of the world. He has served as a member
of various committees and boards such as: Advisor to the Minister for
Regatta Sailing (2007-2008); Member of the Sir. Lynden Pindling Foundation;
Chaplin & Advisor of The Valley Boys Junkanoo Group; National Youth
Committee, to name a few. He holds convention offices as Vice President-at-Large
and Board Member, National Baptist Convention, U.S.A. Inc. (1997-2010);
President, Bahamas National Baptist Missionary & Educational Convention
(1997-2010); Moderator, Bahamas Baptist Association (1988-2010); Vice
President, Baptist World Alliance (2005-2010).

Reverend Dr. Wilma Johnson
Rev.
Dr. Wilma Robena Johnson is the Senior Pastor of New Prospect Missionary
Baptist Church in Detroit, MI. For thirty six years, Dr. Johnson has
continued to teach, conduct workshops and preach the Gospel of Jesus
Christ. Speaking engagements, revivals, retreats, conferences and seminars
have taken her throughout the United States. Dr. Johnson has a Bachelor
of Arts Degree in Business Administration, a Masters of Arts Degree
in Pastoral Ministry and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from the Ecumenical
Theological Seminary in Detroit, Michigan. She is an accomplished author
of a book entitled “Giving Away My
Joy.” Her article about “Priscilla” appears in the
new Women of Color Study Bible. Her article on “Church Growth” appears
in the Fall 2007 issue of the African-American Pulpit. She has also
written articles for the Sunday School Publishing Board of the National
Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. Dr. Johnson is the first female to be
sworn in as a Chaplain for the Wayne County Sheriff Department. She
is the first female pastor to join the Baptist Pastor’s Council
of Detroit and Vicinity.

Reverend Otis Moss, III
Rev.
Otis Moss III is part of a new generation of ministers committed to
preaching prophetically that the message of love and justice are inseparable
companions, forming the foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He
has a unique gift to communicate across generations. His creative bible-based
messages have inspired young and old alike. His intergenerational preaching
gift has made Rev. Moss a popular speaker on college campuses, at conferences
and churches across the globe. Rev. Moss is a native of Cleveland,
OH, an honors graduate of Morehouse College and a graduate of Yale
Divinity School. Pastor Moss is an accomplished author. He published
his first book, Redemption in a Red Light District in 1999 and co-authored
The Gospel Re-Mix; How to Reach the Hip-Hop Generation in 2006. His
sermons articles and poetry have appeared in publications such as Power
in the Pulpit II: America’s Most Effective
Preachers, Joy To The World: Sermons From America’s Pulpit, Sound
The Trumpet: Messages of Hope for Black Men, The Audacity of Faith:
Christian Leaders Reflect on the Election of Barack Obama, Sojourners

Pastoral Care Workshop Speaker
Rev. Dr. F. Keith Slaughter
Dr.
F. Keith Slaughter is the Faculty Chair of the Master of Pastoral Studies
(MPS) Program at American Baptist College in Nashville, TN. Rev. Slaughter
is a graduate of Tuskegee University with a B.S. in History and master’s
studies in Counseling and Student Development, is an honors graduate
of the Morehouse School of Religion/The ITC with a Master of Divinity
in the Psychology of Religion/ Pastoral Care and minor work in Homiletics
and holds the Doctor of Theology degree in Pastoral Counseling from
the ITC, as well. He has served as a Chaplain and counselor for many
troubled souls, and as a clinically-trained helping professional, in
the capacity of pastoral psychotherapist and pastoral counselor. He
is an adjunct professor at the Interdenominational Theological Center
in the Psychology of Religion/Pastoral Care department and has worked
as a researcher at the ITC’s Institute for Faith-Health
Leadership. His dissertation topic is The Impact Potential of Liberative
Black Preaching on the Beingness of African Descent Persons in the
Black Church Context: The Therapeutic Dimensions of Black Preaching.

Reverend Lisa Williams
Elder
Lisa Lee Williams earned a BA in Communications from the University
of Kentucky in Lexington, KY; a Masters of Organizational Management
from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, TN; and a Masters in
Divinity from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. She is currently
pursuing a Doctorate in Ministry at the Louisville Presbyterian Seminary,
Louisville, KY. She is ordained in proclamation ministry under the
covering of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Nashville Tennessee where Bishop
Joseph W. Walker, III-DMin. is senior pastor. Elder Williams has over
15 years of experience in corporate America as a customer service and
project management specialist with organizations such as General Electric,
Humana, HCA and Aspect Communications. She has drawn upon her corporate
experience and her call to ordained ministry to serve the Mt. Zion
Baptist church for 12 years as Overseer of Christian Education and
Special Projects (leadership & ministry development and event coordination).
She currently provides ongoing consulting support to Mt. Zion in these
areas. She serves under the leadership of International Presiding Bishop
Paul S. Morton as an event coordinator for the Full Gospel Baptist
Church Fellowship International Pastors and Ministry Workers Conference.

Reverend Dr. Claudette Copeland
Reverend
Copeland is the founder of Claudette Copeland Ministries (Destiny Ministries
of San Antonio, Texas) a national empowerment group for women. Dr.
Copeland is a founding co-convener of the Women in Ministry Training
Conference, (Atlanta, GA 2006), serving aspiring and active women ministers
in all seasons of their journey. She has a Bachelor of Arts, The University
of Connecticut (Psychology); Master of Divinity, Interdenominational
Theological Center, Atlanta, Georgia (Pastoral Care and Counseling)
Summa Cum Laude; Trained in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE); Doctorate
of Ministry, United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio; and a Post-Doctoral
Certificate, Homiletics at Oxford University, U.K.
Dr. Copeland’s work has been published in the African American
Devotional Bible (Zondervan); and in the African American Pulpit (Judson
Press), where she has served as a board member and contributing writer.
She is the author of: Coming Through the Darkness: Cancer & One
Woman’s Journey To Wholeness (Red Nail Press), along with the
companion prayer journal, Coming Through and Stories from Inner Space:
Confessions of a Preacher Woman and other Tales (Red Nail Press). Her
musical CD entitled, There’s Never Been a Time features an engaging
cross section of sacred music styles. Her literary contribution is
included in This Is My Story: Testimonies and Sermons of Black Women
in Ministry, published by John Knox Press, 2005.
Reverend Marvin A. McMickle, Ph. D.
Dr.
Marvin A. McMickle is a 1970 graduate of Aurora University in Illinois
with a B.A. in Philosophy. His alma mater also awarded him the degree
of Doctor of Divinity in 1990. He earned a Master of Divinity degree
from Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 1973 and did two
additional years of graduate study at Columbia University in New York.
He earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Princeton Theological Seminary
in Princeton, New Jersey in 1983. He was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy
degree (Ph.D.) from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio
in 1998. He was also awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters by Payne
Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, OH in 2010. Dr. McMickle served
as the Senior Pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio from
1987-2011. In May of 2011 he was elected to be the 12th president of
Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, NY. He is the
author of 14 books. He has also authored dozens of articles that regularly
appear in professional journals and magazines. His writings also appear
in Feasting on the Word and Preaching God’s Transforming
Justice; two recent preaching commentaries.
Reverend Dr. Lance Watson
Dr.
Lance D. Watson is a three time Summa Cum Laude graduate of Wayne State
University in Detroit, Michigan from which he holds the Bachelor of
Science in Psychology, the Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and the Master
of Arts in Guidance and Counseling. He is a Magna Cum Laude Graduate
of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University
from which he holds a Master of Divinity and a Summa Cum Laude Graduate
of the Presbyterian School of Christian Education at Union Theological
Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. He completed his doctoral studies at
United Theological Seminary earning the doctorate of ministry degree.
He serves as Senior Pastor of the Saint Paul's Baptist Church of Richmond,
Virginia. He is author of Being Healthy From Now On, Maximize Your
Edge: Navigating Life’s Challenges,
Meet Me in the Morning and the soon to be released, That Was Then,
This is NOW.
Reverend Dr. James Forbes
The
Rev. Dr. James Alexander Forbes, Jr., Senior Minister Emeritus of The
Riverside Church is founder and president of the Healing of the Nations
Foundation. In 2007 he was the host of “The Time
is Now” on Air America Radio. In national and international religious
circles, Dr. Forbes is known as the preacher’s preacher because
of his extensive preaching career and his charismatic style. In its
March 4, 1996 issue Newsweek magazine recognized Forbes as one of the
12 “most effective preachers” in the English-speaking world.
This pastor, educator, administrator, community activist and interfaith
leader was twice designated as one of America’s greatest Black
preachers by Ebony magazine. Dr. Forbes has earned three degrees and
has been awarded 13 honorary degrees. He earned a doctor of ministry
degree from Colgate-Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, NY; a master
of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City,
NY; and a bachelor of science in chemistry from Howard University in
Washington, D.C. He earned his clinical pastoral education certificate
from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA. Two of Dr. Forbes’ songs
have been published in the Silver Burdett Songbooks for schools: “We
Shall Overcome” and “Our Families Together.” Dr.
Forbes has performed the narration for several large musical productions,
including Mendelssohn’s “Elijah” with the Riverside
choir.
