Classifications and Symbols
A double-letter symbol and a three digit number classify courses. The letter symbol refers to the specific area of study within the division that offers the course. The first digit of the course number indicates the class level of the course:
1 = freshman level courses
2 = sophomore level courses
3 = junior level courses
4 = senior level courses
5 = advanced level courses
The last digit of the course number indicates the semester in which the course is offered; odd numbers are fall semester offerings; and even numbers are Spring semester offerings. If a subject is a two-semester course, two numbers will appear following the divisional symbol.
After the course symbol and number, the name of the course and a description of its content and methods of instruction are given.
If a course is listed under another division other than the one that offers it, this means that the course is accepted in both divisions to meet divisional requirements. In such “secondary” listings, a cross-reference is given to the division that offers it, so that the course description can be found under that divisional heading. Completion of a course that is listed in more than one division can meet requirements in only one of the divisions.
Parentheses enclosing either one or two digits separated by a hyphen indicate the number of semester hours credit earned in the course. The number of class hours per week that the course meets ordinarily corresponds to the semester hours credit earned. However, if a class meets either more or less class periods than is indicated by the semester hour digit, this is stated in the course description.
Frequency of Course Offerings
With the exception of foundational studies, educational support and certain other basic courses, many of the courses in the curriculum are not offered every year. Most of these are offered in alternate years. A few are offered less frequently on demand.
The breadth of the curriculum and the carefully calculated distribution of courses over a four-year cycle means that there will always be courses in each of the divisions for the student to select from, even though a particular course may not be offered at the time it is desired by the student.
While the College publishes its intention to offer the courses described in this bulletin at the time indicated in the schedule, it reserves the right to withdraw any course for which there is an insufficient demand. If within one week of the registration date for the semester fewer than eight students have registered for a course being offered, the division offering that course may be permitted to withdraw the course and arrange for the registered students to meet any requirements attached thereto in some other way. In such cases, the Academic Dean makes the final decision.
