Institute on Black Church Sacred Music

The Institute on Black Church Sacred Music and Worship will host three separate institutes this year. The first was held in Nashville, TN at the Lewis Scruggs Center of American Baptist College on Tuesday, June 15, 2010.

The second will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2010, from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Tabernacle Community Church at 2500 West Medford Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53206. Host pastors are Rev. Don Darius Butler, Dr. Charles E. Thornhill, and Rev. William Robbins.

The third will be held at the New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, 1349 Klien Avenue, Venice, IL, Saturday, August 21, 2010, from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The host pastor is the Rev. Larry Brown.

The theme for these institutes, “The Hymnal Project: Reviving an Appreciation for Congregational Song in Christian Worship—Past and Present” is designed to involve churches in a new endeavor. The Sunday School Publishing Board of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. in partnership with GIA Publications, Inc. is developing a new hymnal. It is the mission of this year’s IBCSMW to provide helpful suggestions to the hymnal selection committee in the area of Praise and Worship music, and to revive the vibrant tradition of hymn singing in corporate worship.

This year’s institutes will consist of

  • Vibrant Worship
  • An African American Hymnal Chronological Review
  • A Hymnal Project Overview
  • A Sampling of Selections from the New Hymnal
  • Invitation to Make Recommendations for the New Hymnal

Each year, including the current one, we strongly encourage Senior Pastors and Ministers/Director of Music to attend together.

The presenters are Dr. Sherman R. Tribble, Coordinator of the Hymnal Project, Sunday School Publishing Board, Nashville, TN; Dr. Tony McNeill, President/Founder of The Call 2 Worship Group, LLC, Charlotte, NC; Mr. James Scandrick, Director, Institute on Black Church Sacred Music and Worship.

If you are interested in attending, please print and mail or fax your registration form to Rev. Amy E. Steele no later than August 2, 2010.
