American Baptist College aims to reinvent agenda to draw students

American Baptist College in Nashville has never had a lot of money or a huge student body, but the school, which trains African-American ministers, has always been a place that generated big dreams and helped move mountains.

In its heyday, students helped launch the sit-in campaign to desegregate lunch counters in Nashville. It's the only school owned and operated by the National Baptist Convention USA, one of the nation's largest African-American denominations.

But today, enrollment is down, finances are tight and school leaders are trying to reinvent the college's social justice agenda for the 21st century by applying its civil rights heritage to issues like pop culture, poverty, the prosperity gospel and corporate greed.
