Vibrant
Ministries: Tools for Sustaining Pastoral Excellence
Vibrant Ministries: Tools for Sustaining Pastoral Excellence is a program for
pastors and lay leaders who desire spiritual and theological renewal.
Vibrant Ministries is a program that has been designed to assist pastors
and congregations in their exploration of those issues and practices
that are most relevant to ministry today.
Program Components
There are five components of the Vibrant Ministries: Tools for Sustaining Pastoral
Excellence:
- Pastoral Circles for Theological Study
The Pastoral Circles for Theological Study (PCTS) is a program designed
to enhance spirituality through theological reflection. The pastoral
study circles provide an arena of dialogue for pastors to discuss
issues of theological concern particularly related to ministry and
leadership. The study circle format also provides an avenue for pastors
to dialogue with peers on the multiplicity of responsibilities and
issues facing the local pastor.
- Institute on Black Church Sacred Music and Worship
The Institute on Black Church Sacred Music and Worship is a three day
workshop designed to bring together senior ministers and directors/ministers
of music. The Institute on Black Church Sacred Music and Worship focuses
on the sacred musical traditions of the African American church and
how its utilization in healthy worship can assist pastors, congregational
leaders, and ministers of music to nurture and sustain excellence
in worship.
- New
Pastors Institute
The
New Pastors Institute was created with new pastors in mind. The New
Pastors Institute seeks to help new pastors develop the indispensable
skills and disciplines necessary to fulfill their multiple roles in
church and society. The New Pastors Institute also seeks to help pastors
make sense of their vocational responsibility in light of their personal
gifts, the changing context of ministry, and the unique culture of
the church. Ultimately, the Institute seeks to provide new pastors
with tools for sustaining pastoral excellence in congregational life.
- Theological
Roundtables
In
collaboration with the American Bible Society, which provided a $10,000
grant, American Baptist College launched the Distinguished Speakers
Dialogue Series in Black History Month of 2002. This dialogue series
included presentations from several outstanding church and community
leaders: United Methodist Bishop Leontine Kelly; Rep. John R. Lewis,
5th District, GA; Peter Paris, Professor of Christian Ethics, Princeton
University; and the Rev. Dr. Hycel B. Taylor, former pastor of the
historic Pilgrim Baptist Church of Chicago. After formal presentations,
these speakers participated in roundtable discussions regarding the
theological matters raised in the presentations. Our aim for these
dialogic encounters is to encourage theological renewal for pastors
in Christian ministry.
- Garnett-Nabrit
Lectures Series
The
Garnett-Nabrit Lecture Series (GNL) is an annual event at American
Baptist College. GNL seeks to connect alumni, participants in the
Sustaining Pastoral Excellence Program, and friends of the college.
This event celebrates those who have graduated from the college, public
servants who have especially impacted Middle Tennessee, and those
who have been associated with the college and its work in social justice.
The Garnett-Nabrit Lectures have historically brought together the
community, church leaders and pastors, students, and academicians.
The event includes the Nanny Helen Burroughs Luncheon, the Presidents
Gala, the Alumni Breakfast, musical guests, and a series of lectures
and worship services. Click here to go to the Garnett-Nabrit Lectures
Series section on this website.
