From the President's Desk

A New President at the Helm of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. and what it means for American Baptist College

Many National Baptists were thrilled that on Thursday, September 10, 2009, the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. elected ABC alumnus and Board of Trustees member the Reverend Dr. Julius R. Scruggs as its next president. Rev. Scruggs’ victory was a great victory in the National Baptist Convention: Dr. Scruggs won the election by an overwhelming vote (4,076 to 924). This wide margin of votes established a new mandate of leadership for National Baptists. With Rev. Scruggs’ election to the presidency of one of the largest Black religious organizations in the nation comes the excitement of a new leadership mandate that is prophetic and committed to social justice and divine justice. For this reason, I am excited about the outcome of this election. I believe his leadership will positively impact the theological direction, denominational mission and relevance not only of National Baptists nationally, but will also impact the future of Black Christianity globally.

In his first public statement after the election, Rev. Scruggs outlined several “vision perspectives” that he believes National Baptists can accomplish with unity of purpose and commitment to God. Among those “vision perspectives” is providing the resources necessary to make American Baptist College, the only college affiliated with the Convention, a prominent and effective educational institution for training and developing future leaders for church and society. There is hope, trust, and new expectations surrounding the excitement of this new mandate which I believe National Baptists will meet with fresh Christian vigor and commitment.

Due to Rev. Scruggs’ priority for higher biblical and theological education, there are plans for the transformation of American Baptist College to become a preeminent school for training women and men as future social justice leaders. Rev. Scruggs' platform for the Convention represents the most aggressive theological agenda in recent times that has the potential to impact the political culture of the Convention in ways that affirm a new vision for social justice ministry in the world.
